GWSSA Spring Meeting

GWSSA Spring Meeting, February 2024
Location: the Studio, Glasgow.

This was a well attended meeting with over 70 delegates attending, with a range of speakers and topics both locally and nationally.

Our morning session was opened by our president, Dr Ken McKinlay, before we heard from two excellent national speakers. First Dr. Ned Gilbert-Kawai took us from research at altitude on Mount. Everest, to the critical care bedside, and how this research may help us to treat the critically ill patient with specific mention of the phenotypes of critical illness, the microcirculation, and use of therapeutic modulation. Following that we heard from pEEG-enthusiast Dr. Mark Barley about how pEEG can help us after NAP-7 as a potential early warning system (suppression of frequency and amplitude of the pEEG can be caused by hypoxia, hypotension, bleeding etc).

Our next session focused largely on training with two local speakers Dr. Derek McLaughlan, and Dr. Drew Smith giving insight into the portfolio pathway and the different options that are available to those not on the training pathway, and how national anaesthesia recruitment is changing. The final talk of this sessionw as from Dr. Rahat Maitland, who spoke about new technology in Type 1 diabetes.

In our final session we heard firstly from Dr. Fin O’Sullivan who gave an update on guidance related to trauma – specifically recent European Guidelines [low threshold for vasopressin, poor evidence for platelet transfusions], PATCH trial – pre-hospital tranexamic acid for severe trauma, and CRYOSTAT-2, use of early fibrinogen supplementation. Following this we heard from Dr. Andy Clark with the pick of the papers – specifically Delerium – sevoflurane vs. propofol, and the use of pEEG-guided GA to decrease post-operative delirium, the MAGIC trial [melatonin vs. midazolam pre-medication] and the UK-REBOA trial [REBOA vs standard care].

Our final speaker of the day was our outgoing president, Dr Ken McKinlay, who spoke about his career in cardiothoracics, and the evolution of the heart and lung service during his career.
